How To Hand A Door

The ‘handing’ of a door refers to the direction in which the door swings.  Door handing is important for two main reasons.  First, you want to ensure that the door you are installing swings in the proper direction.  Second, it is important that both the door and accompanying hardware are handed alike. If you order a left-hand door with a right-hand lever set you’ll have a big problem to deal with. Door handing must be specified before production and will arrive on-site with hardware and/or door preps in all the right places. If you order your locking hardware separately, often times the same item has varying part numbers for each handing option, however the handing of some hardware can be adapted during installation.

There are four ways a door can be handed:

  1. Right hand
  2. Right hand reverse
  3. Left hand
  4. Left hand reverse

So, how do you determine the handing of a door?

DOOR HANDING THE EASY WAY

Stand outside the room you want to secure and take note of which side of the door the hinges are on. If the hinges are on the left side of the door it is a left hand door. If the hinges are on the right side of the door it is a right hand door. If you pull the door towards you it is either left or right hand reverse depending upon the handing of the door you’ve determined by the location of the hinges.
